Azerbaijani authorities arrested brother with false accusations to take revenge on Elshad Abdullayev.
Mubariz Abdullayev is a nephew of Elshad Abdullayev, formerrector of Azerbaijan International University, which has been shut down. In September 2012, Elshad Abdullayev released a scandalous video which promptly occupied newsheadlines. The video portrays a negotiation between Elshad Abdullayev and a former MP from the ruling party at the time, Gular Ahmadova, as well as Sevinj Babayeva, afriend of Ahmadova who was introduced as an intermediary. In the video, the MPrequests 1 million AZN from Elshad Abdullayev to get him elected as aparliamentarian, saying that this money would be delivered to Ramiz Mehdiyev, headof the Presidential Administration.
He was arrsted on  21 August 2013 and charged Article 182.3.2 (extortion, committed with a viewto obtain a large amount of property) of the Criminal Code.
Elshad Abdullayev’s brother Mahir Abdullayev, an employee of the Ministry of National Security, went missing in 2003. Abdullayev publicly condemned theAzerbaijani government, in particular the law-enforcement agencies. The charge brought against Mubariz Abdullayev is also linked with his missing uncleMahir Abdullayev. According to the accusation, a while after Mahir Abdullayev wentmissing, Mubariz Abdullayev called his uncle Elshad Abdullayev on behalf ofanother person saying that he had his brother and demanded 50,000 AZN for return.He demanded to bring the money to Zagatala.However, Elshad Abdullayev did not go to Zagatala and gave no money to anyone.
On 21 August 2013, Mubariz Abdullayev was sentenced to 10 years in jail by Lankaran Grave Crimes Court. Shirvan Court of Appeal’s judge Saleh Suleymanovupheld the judgment on 3 June 2014. Supreme Court also did not grant the appealof Abdullayev on 5 March 2015.
